merry christmas! / reflecting on 2023

Posted by HaylenWillis - December 25th, 2023

just thought i'd pop on here and say merry christmas to all of newgrounds, this year for me personally has been much better than last year, i'm doing much better mentally and i've picked up more interests and hobbies and i've learnt more about producing music, etc!! and honestly, i've just found out more about myself these past 12 months. but who tf could forget music, i've recorded and released a fair bit, including an album, some ep's, etc. i remember at the start of the year i started getting really and i mean fucking REALLLLY into boards of canada, their stuff gave me so much musical inspiration and energy, i see it as quite bizzare and i don't think the influence they've had on me will ever be topped, i also started listening to another artist that i have heard of for a while but never listened to until this year, phil elverum aka mount eerie has made tracks that have made me cry (like the title track from the glow pt. 2) i also gave his album "dawn" a listen and i was a bit shook by the lyrics, now i listen to that shit almost every night so props to phil for making some of my most favourite tracks not only of this year but just in general. in recent months i've started getting into the work of c418 (who i've known literally since the beginning of humanity) and four tet, i started listened to much more of c418's non-minecraft stuff than stuff from that game, including his 2008 album "zweitonegoismus" it's such an emotional and easy going album that still has some headbangers and also varies in genre but most (if not all) of it is experimental, watching his interview with anthony fantano was one hell of a treat too. i came across four tet's 2003 album "rounds" on rateyourmusic while looking at a genre that i've started to really love called "folktronica" the rounds album was like a warm welcome to that genre, everything about it is also hella emotional and explores different types of sounds and overall is some good shit. the track "unspoken" is probably my most favourite, either that or "my angel rocks back and forth" but awesome stuff nonetheless. growing up until not long after i started making music, all i really listened to was edm, dubstep, drum and bass and every now and then, video game osts which is why i had never heard of the artists i've mentioned in this post so it's good to be listening to and finding out about new shit. it's also been an experience learning from that and (and at least try) putting it into my own stuff. i'm excited to see all the high highs and low lows that 202fucken4 will bring and the stuff that i'll record and release. that's really all i have to say for this year, a rocky path but one that was worth it. i hope you all enjoyed or enjoy your christmas, and i hope everyone has fun celebrating 2024. next year will be fucking big!

and with all that out of the way, thanks for sticking with me throughout and i love each and every single one of you. thanks for a great year and here's to another!

byeeee! :) <3
